2735 Macomb St, N.W.

Jill Schick, Schick Goldstein Architects, P.C.

Summary

Built in 1916, 2735 Macomb Street, N.W. is a contributing structure in the Cleveland Park Historic District. Within the past ten years, a partial renovation was done to the bungalow and the current proposal will address some of those changes in addition to adding new features. Included in the proposal are the addition of two sky lights in the front porch roof, the construction of a new dormer on the north side of the house, the replacement of the rear windows with steel and glass windows and doors, and the replacement of all of the existing windows in the house. The proposal includes significant change to the east, 27th Street side of the house. The glass surround on the sun porch will be removed and the column detail will be restored while adding sliding windows and a door. A sunken roof deck with a glass railing will be added atop the side porch along with a new door and several new windows. On the first floor of this side of the house, in addition to new doors and windows, several existing windows will be lengthened. The steep concrete stairs from the front porch to the driveway will be removed and replaced by storage space under the front porch.

ARC Recommendation

The ARC commends the reconstruction of the side sun porch allowing for the original columns to be visible. While not objecting to the addition of the porch skylights, the ARC suggests the use of flat skylights. A plastic bubble should be avoided. The significant changes in the fenestration on the east side of the house with new holes in the wall for additional doors and windows on the first, second and basement levels is a concern. The smaller, single-sash “piano” windows which are characteristic of this period and the house’s style should not be enlarged. Consideration should be given to limiting the number of new doors to one on this side of the house.
