Hidden Alleyways of Washington, DC: A Recap from our 2025 Annual Meeting
At our Annual Meeting on June 12th, historian and author Kim Prothro Williams joined us to share how up until the mid-20th century, DC’s unique hidden alleyways served as centers of commerce and residential life for some of the city’s most vulnerable communities. While these alleyways suffered from public health crises, overcrowding, and a lack of essential services, Kim also pointed out how these spaces served as important centers of family life for their predominantly Black residents. Kim's book, Hidden Alleyways of Washington, DC, is a must-read for anyone interested in local history and culture.
