Anne Smith
Board Member
Anne Smith has lived in her home on Ordway Street with her husband, Malcolm Bertoni, since 1992. Their daughter attended John Eaton Elementary School. They selected the Cleveland Park neighborhood because of its blend of urban and nearly rural settings, its wide variety of architectural styles, and its still-evident roots in the earliest days of the area's development.
Anne believes her views align with the mission of CPHS as, during her childhood of living in many places, she most enjoyed living in locales that had clearly maintained their own unique cultural/historic identities. Professionally, Anne specializes in environmental and energy analysis, addressing such matters in the context of business strategies, public policy, and litigation.
She was a managing partner in consulting firms for over 30 years before transitioning to independent consulting in 2022. She also remains active on select engagements with her last firm, National Economic Research Associates. Anne has served on multiple types of boards and expert committees, such as study committees of the National Academies of Sciences and of the United Nations Environment Programme, on the US Environmental Protection Agency's Chartered Science Advisory Committee, and on the boards of directors of one of her consulting firms and of the Society for Benefit-Cost Analysis.
She received a B.A. from Duke University, and a Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University with a Ph.D. minor from Stanford's Engineering School.
