One|Street Commercial Properties, the developer of a 23-unit apartment building at 3427 Wisconsin Avenue in the Cleveland Park historic district, is seeking suggestions for a name that has some historical or local significance for the building.
The new building will span two lots historically occupied by two brick four-square houses at 3427 Wisconsin and 3433 Wisconsin Avenue that were erected in the 1920s. The two houses and garages –both contributing structures in the Cleveland Park Historic District – are being relocated to Norton Place and Ordway Street.
Here is a little background on the site and area:
- The site sits on the 17th-century land grant called Pretty Prospects. The first building on Pretty Prospects dates to approximately 1740 and evolved into what is now Rosedale on Newark Street. The first documented resident to occupy Rosedale was Uriah Forrest, a Revolutionary War veteran, original proprietor, and friend of George Washington.
- Oak View, the name of Grover Cleveland’s “summer White House” in Cleveland Park (also nicknamed “Red Top” due to its red clay tile roof), once stood across the street from Rosedale, between Newark and Macomb Streets, but was demolished in the 1920s.
- The house at 3427 Wisconsin was built in 1926 for William H. Clarke, a prominent banking official and owner and founder of the C.C. Linen Company.
- 3433 Wisconsin was built in 1922 for George W. Offutt, a Georgetown banker and developer, and also prominent in city affairs.
If you have a suggestion, please email it to info@clevelandparkhistoricalsociety.org and we will share it with the developer and post it on our website.
