 3420 Newark Street, N.W.
Agent: Wouter Boer, Boer Architects
3420 Newark Street was built in 1909 and is a contributing structure in the Cleveland Park Historic District. An addition was added to the house in 1991. The current proposal includes a porch infill to create a mudroom at the front of the house and window and door alterations on the 1991 portion of the house. The replacement windows will more closely match the windows of the original house than the existing 1991 windows. The roof on the front and rear porches will also be replaced.
The ARC recommends that the mudroom addition be stepped back from the adjacent column in order to create space between the column and the new window wall and to give the column more breathing room. This will also be a recognition of the existing side porch. The ARC has no objection to the window replacements in the 1991 portion of the house.
The motion passed 6-0.
3422 Porter Street, N.W.
Agent: Colleen Healey, Healey Architecture
Built in 1922, this house is a contributing structure in the historic district. There was a renovation of the house in 2007. The current proposal includes a two-story rear addition with a crawl space. An existing small rear bump out will be removed. Â There are no changes proposed for the front of the house. The roof line of the rear addition will not exceed the current roof line and the depth of the addition will be in line with the house on the west side and behind the house to the east. On the east side, the addition will be flush with the existing house, while on the west side, there will be a six-inch step back. Certain windows in the house will be replaced and other materials include hardi panels and an asphalt shingle roof.
The ARC has no objection to this rear addition which is in line with or behind its neighbors but notes the importance of materials and a muted color scheme in the final design.
The motion passed 6-0.
3206 Rowland Street, N.W.
Agent: Michael P. Cook, AIA, Cook Architecture
3206 Rowland, a one-story midcentury modern house built in 1959, is something of a rarity in Cleveland Park.  Later, a bedroom wing was added to the rear of the house. The current proposal includes the construction of a one-story glassed entry space on the north, front side of the house and a one-story addition on the south side of the house. These two additions will add 66 SF and 412 SF of space respectively. The south side addition will extrude from the existing house. Materials will include bricks matching the existing house, steel posts as necessary, and wood frame windows.
The ARC appreciated the sympathetic additions to the house which will benefit from this design. And also recognizes the thoroughness of the presentation.
The motion passed 6-0.
