3401 Newark Street, N.W.
Agent: Dagmar Fisher and Anne Decker, Decker Architects
Constructed in 1895, 3401 Newark Street is a contributing structure in the Cleveland Park Historic District. The proposal includes the removal of a more recent three-story rear addition and the construction of a new two-story rear addition. This addition will be connected to the original house by a “hyphen” and the roof line of the addition will align with the original house. The materials for the new structure will include a metal-paneled bay on the east side, steel windows and a stucco finish. There will be no changes to the front elevation, however, the front porch will be refurnished using like materials. On the west side, a window will be replaced with one more compatible with the windows in the original house. A studio in the rear yard which was originally a garage with a driveway to 34th Street will also be updated.
The ARC has no objection to the proposal as presented and commends the thoughtful design of the addition which is respectful of the original house. However, the ARC has several suggestions. The depth of the proposed bay on the east side of the house should be slightly reduced in size so that it does not appear to project beyond the bay of the original house, and the cornice line of the roof of the proposed addition should be given more weight.
The motion passed 8-0.
