Agent: Lee Marsteller, Cole Group
2808 Ordway Street, N.W. was built in 1940 and is a contributing structure in the Historic District. The detached house faces Ordway Street but is surrounded by alley ways on the south and east sides. The proposal includes the construction of a two-story rear addition. Materials will include hardi-plank or a similar material for the siding and the new windows will be wood clad or a similar material. There are no changes proposed for the front of the house. The footprint of the addition will be approximately 22 feet by 16 feet.
The ARC has no objection to the proposed addition. The ARC also recognizes the uniqueness of this site and has the following comments. Given the location of the building, the ARC did not think that the addition needed to step in by several inches on the north and south sides as is typically found in rear additions to historic homes. Although the ARC has no objection to the massing, it also encourages the owner and the architect to recognize the opportunity presented by this site and to consider a creative, unique design for the rear addition.
The motion passed 7-0.
3500 Connecticut Avenue, N.W.
The proposal includes the construction of a permanent structure in front of the restaurant, Medium Rare. Due to the late submission of the proposal, the ARC did not have the benefit of a presentation by the owner or their agent. Also, the drawings available to the ARC were incomplete, notably lacking was a front elevation and a detailed site plan.
The ARC does not support the construction of a permanent structure on the sidewalk, on the façade of a contributing structure particularly one so close to a Metro stop.
